Liberal Marriage Laws Influence Current Wedding Trends

In July 2015, Jersey approved the right to open air weddings, allowing couples the freedom to get married anywhere on the Island. Until this liberalisation of the marriage law, ceremonies were only permitted in churches or registered premises.

Ananya Cards, an award winning, bespoke luxury stationery company operating across Jersey and London, has welcomed the changes. Their team have noticed how these developments have influenced current wedding trends. The wide array of spectacular locations throughout Jersey allow a couple tremendous scope in choosing a venue that’s perfect for their special day.

The coastal and country locations are inspiring couples to focus on the environment in their designs and use nature to influence their wedding colour pallets. Soft colours have become very popular for not just the invitation but the entire wedding colour scheme. Dusky pinks and muted greens are the colours of choice for ceremonies set in Jersey’s countryside. Alternatively, soft creams and golden tones are on trend for beach weddings.

Subtle colours leave space for additional details within wedding stationery. Dainty illustrations of flowers have found favour with Jersey brides-to-be, while intricate filigree designs are adding an extra stamp of luxury. Ananya Cards have also observed that monograms have become increasingly sought after as a way to add that extra personal touch. The couple’s initials can be stylised and combined with illustrations and motifs to create an image that symbolises the couple and works in harmony with the tone of the wedding. The use of calligraphy is back in fashion – the romance and grandeur of the Downton Abbey era is not lost on islanders. Tissue lined envelopes are also on trend, adding to the excitement of unveiling a wedding invitation. The top tip for 2016 is the use of glitter lined envelopes to further enhance the recipient’s experience by adding a touch of sparkle. With a local trend in smaller weddings, these luxury, bespoke options are more achievable within couples’ budgets as they scale down the number of invitees. Ananya Cards say that it’s now common for couples to set their sights on enjoying their wedding in more personal and intimate settings. While Jersey weddings are most prevalent in spring and summer, Ananya Cards have seen an increase in winter ceremonies and destination weddings for their London couples. As a result, wedding stationery in London is embracing a more vibrant and diverse colour pallet. London’s rich and multicultural community has led the way in the use of bold and beautiful designs. From plush cerise, to gold filigree patterns and scented invitations, the wedding stationery of London is setting the scene for a more vivacious and vibrant wedding for the future.
